Co-operators General Insurance Company boomed in 2021.

The company reported net income of $512.4 million, up sharply from $290.4 million in 2020. This amounts to an increase of 76.4 per cent or $222 million.

For the fourth quarter of 2021 alone, Co-operators General reported net income of $42.9 million, compared with $139.1 million in Q4 2020, for a decrease of 69.2 per cent or $96.2 million.

Combined ratio  

The company’s combined ratio was 89.2 per cent in 2021, down from 95 per cent in 2020. This 5.8-point improvement “was largely the result of premium growth coupled with lower claims activity in the commercial and auto lines of business, partially offset by higher claims activity in the home and farm lines of business.”

For the fourth quarter of 2021, the combined ratio was 99 per cent, compared with 90.9 per cent in Q4 2020. This 8.1 point increase “was primarily driven by an increase in our expense ratio, which deteriorated 5.1 percentage points to 38.2%, due to increases in operating costs from higher strategic initiative spend,” Co-operators General explains.

Underwriting income  

Excluding the market yield adjustment, Co-operators General reported underwriting income of $406.7 million in 2021, versus $180.1 million in 2020. The corresponding increase is 125.8 per cent or $226.6 million.

For the fourth quarter of 2021 alone, Co-operators General reported underwriting income of $10.2 million, down from $86.2 million in Q4 2020, for a decrease of 88.2 per cent or $76 million.

Premiums  

Co-operators General reported direct written premiums (DWP) of $4.1 billion in 2021, up from $3.9 billion in 2020. This increase of 5.1 per cent or $198.4 million “was driven by higher average premiums across all lines of business and geographical regions, particularly in the commercial and home lines of business,” the insurer says.

Net earned premium (NEP) was $3.8 billion in 2021, versus $3.6 billion in 2020. This increase of 5.8 per cent or $208.1 million is “a result of growth seen across all our geographic regions and all core lines of business.”

For the fourth quarter of 2021 alone, Co-operators General reported DWP of $1 billion, compared with $988.1 million in Q4 2020. This is an increase of 4.4 per cent or $43.7 million. NEP was $965.9 million in the fourth quarter of 2021, versus $950.5 million in the Q4 2020. The increase of 61 per cent or $15.4 million is “attributable to higher average premiums combined with an increase in policies in force in the commercial and home lines of business.”

Investments  

Co-operators General reported net investment income and gains of $237.9 million in 2021, down from $289 million in 2020. This decrease of 17.7 per cent or $51.1 million results from “realized losses on bonds due to rising interest rates, combined with lower realized gains on common shares, due to lower turnover compared to the prior year,” Co-operators General says. The insurer adds that these losses “were partially offset by higher unrealized gains on preferred shares and lower impairment losses when compared to the prior year.”

In the fourth quarter of 2021, net investment income and gains were $44.5 million, compared with $108.2 million in Q4 2020. This decline of 58.9 per cent or $63.7 million “was primarily driven by unrealized preferred share losses and realized bond losses, which is in contrast to unrealized preferred share gains and realized bond gains in the same quarter of the prior year,” the insurer points out.
