The Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA), the voluntary trade association representing 99 per cent of life and health insurers in Canada, announced, following its annual general meeting, that Manulife Canada’s president and CEO, Michael Doughty, is leading the organization as chair of the CLHIA for a one-year term, effective June 1.

Doughty is succeeding Beneva CEO, Jean-François Chalifoux (Beneva was formed when La Capitale and SSQ Insurance merged in 2020), following the completion of Chalifoux’s own one-year term in the role with the CLHIA.

Doughty has experience in similar roles, formerly serving as chair of international industry trade association, LL Global, the non-profit parent company for LIMRA (formerly the Life Insurance Marketing and Research Association) and LOMA (Life Office Management Association).

In his various roles at Manulife – he has been with the company since 1992 - Doughty has served as interim president and CEO at John Hancock, Manulife’s U.S. segment, as president and general manager of John Hancock Insurance, as executive vice president of individual insurance roughly for Manulife Canada and as leader of Manulife’s group savings and retirement business in Canada.
