The Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) has authorized group insurer Alan Canada to operate in Quebec in the areas of life insurance and health and accident insurance, according to a notice published on Oct. 23, 2025, in the regulator's weekly bulletin. Alan Canada received this authorization on Oct. 15.
The AMF's notice identifies Alan Canada as Alan CA Inc. and indicates that the insurer's head office is located at 8 King Street E. in Toronto. It adds that the law firm Blakes is acting as Alan CA's agent in Quebec. Alan CA is a subsidiary of the French insurtech company Alan.
In the AMF's register of insurers, Mark Goad is listed as “President and Chief Executive Officer (General Manager).” The registry specifies that the insurer is a member of Assuris. The registry lists Alan CA as a Canadian chartered corporation, incorporated on Aug. 11, 2023, and licensed on Jan. 14, 2025.
Alan CA is regulated by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI). The company has been registered with the Quebec government since June 12, 2025. It has a single shareholder, the French company Alan SA, located in Paris. SA stands for société anonyme, which is the equivalent in Canada of a publicly traded company.
The Quebec business registry lists Odile Kusnik as the “natural person” at Alan Canada's head office in Toronto. In an email exchange with the Insurance Portal, Kusnik stated that she held the position of insurance director at Alan CA. Her LinkedIn profile indicates that she previously held the position of director of health insurance offerings at the parent company in Paris.
Direct insurer in four provinces
In addition to Quebec, Alan CA has been authorized to operate as an insurer in Ontario since Jan. 2025. It was authorized to operate in Alberta shortly thereafter, and in British Columbia this summer.
Contacted by the Insurance Portal, Odile Kusnik said she wanted to wait until Alan Canada announced its entry into the Quebec market before being interviewed.
At the time of writing, Alan CA had not announced its authorization to operate in Quebec on its website and had not yet posted any content in French, apart from news about Alan's operations in France.
Alan CA is an insurtech company that sells group insurance directly to businesses, bypassing the group insurance broker network, which allows it to reduce its costs. On its website, Alan Canada estimates that it can reduce the administrative costs of its private plans to 15% of the group insurance premium, rather than 30%. It attributes these savings to the elimination of phone calls, paperwork, and the use of advisors.
Two plans...
Alan Canada currently offers two group insurance plans: Alan Marmot and Alan Bear.
Alan Marmot covers 100% of prescription drugs up to an annual maximum of $10,000, basic and preventive dental care up to an annual maximum of $2,000, and paramedical care up to an annual maximum of $500. This plan is available starting at $150 per month per employee.
Alan Bear covers the same benefits as Alan Marmot, but at 80%. Prescription drug reimbursement is capped at $3,000 per year, and dental care reimbursement is capped at $1,500. The reimbursement limit for paramedical care remains at $500. This program is available for up to an annual amount of $500. It is available starting at $107 per month per employee.
...And a game
In June 2025, Alan CA launched the Alan Play app in Ontario. The app encourages members (plan participants) to exercise by offering them healthy lifestyle challenges. When they achieve their goals, members earn points in the form of berries, which entitle them to rewards.
On its website, the insurer claims that the wellness challenges built into the app boost engagement and reduce absenteeism. According to Alan Pay usage statistics, each member took an average of 20,000 more steps per month, and 80% of human resources managers reported that team cohesion had improved.
For small businesses
Alan CA targets tech startups and small businesses. In a blog post on its website, a comparison chart mentions that its group insurance plan is ideal for companies with 10 to 100 employees.
Alan (SA) was founded in France in 2016 by Jean-Charles Samuelian and Charles Gorintin. Alan has made a name for itself in the group insurance sector by winning a series of public service tenders. In the spring of 2025, Alan made a big splash by becoming the group insurer for the 130,000 civil servants of France’s Ministry of Economy and Finance.
