The Life Insurance Council of the Alberta Insurance Council has ordered Mahsa Gholami to pay a civil penalty of $750 after the agent incorrectly entered a course code, leading him to believe and falsely report that he had sufficient continuing education (CE) credits to renew his license.
The council suspended Gholami’s license in September 2021 for his failure to produce CE course certificates as part of that regulator’s annual CE audit. In the days leading up to his suspension, Gholami completed the missing education and entered the credits, and followed up by email, informing the council that the required credits were completed.
“It was not my intention to be dishonest or misrepresent,” Gholami stated in a letter provided in response to the council’s report on the investigation. “It was a time of great stress for me. I rushed through the process of online renewal and did not double check.”
Despite his efforts to obtain the required number of CE hours, the council still found that the agent made a false or misleading statement, and ordered the civil penalty.
