The Alberta Insurance Council has fined and suspended former life accident and sickness insurance agent, Alexander Wilson, after Wilson was unable to provide proof of having sufficient continuing education (CE) credits.

According to the council, the agent failed or refused to provide information requested by way of a formal demand for information.

Wilson was asked to provide records related to his 2019 licensing period after being randomly selected for an audit in March 2020. Wilson’s certificates of authority were suspended due to his failure to produce the CE records.

According to the insurance council decision, Wilson says he was unable to find copies of his CE certificates because his office was closed due to COVID-19. Wilson also had his files packed up and in storage when asked to furnish proof of CE, as he was in the process of moving to a new location. According to the decision, Wilson has since been unable to find the missing paperwork.

The Alberta Insurance Council adds that individuals who hold certificates of authority must keep records issued by CE providers when CE courses are completed for three years following the expiry of the certificate term and must provide the information upon request. “If the individual does not provide the records within 30 days after receiving a request from the Minister, the certificate of authority is suspended until the demand is complied with,” they write.

In addition to having his license suspended, Wilson must also pay a civil penalty totaling $750.
