American Honda Motor Co. joins the list of automakers offering insurance to owners of their vehicles.
The company has launched Honda Insurance Solutions, an insurance agency providing “competitive pricing and coverage options for autos, motorcycles, RVs, homes and more” to Honda and Acura vehicle owners living in the United States.
To do so, Honda partnered with VIU by HUB, a digital personal insurance brokerage platform operated by HUB International. Through this platform, Honda and Acura customers will have access to “quotes from top insurance providers, with expert and transparent guidance from VIU by HUB's licensed insurance agents,” according to the press release announcing the launch, dated July 24.
“Honda Insurance Solutions marks the beginning of Honda's broader insurance strategy, with future plans to integrate insurance offerings into digital vehicle sales platforms and develop new products that enhance safety and convenience,” the release continues.
And in Canada?
Contacted by the Insurance Portal, Maxime Caron, Manager, Communications & Foundation, at Honda Canada, states that this offering “is only available in the United States” and that “there are currently no plans to offer this product in Canada.”
Caron also confirms that Honda and Acura vehicle owners in Canada currently have no insurance options offered by the manufacturer. They must therefore purchase insurance independently.
And the competition?
Like Honda, several automakers have launched insurance offerings for their customers in the United States, including General Motors, Ford, and Tesla. The latter two also offer insurance programs to their Canadian customers.
Tesla has done so through a partnership with Aviva Canada since late 2017. “We offer InsureMyTesla in Ontario and Quebec,” the insurer’s spokesperson told the Insurance Portal. The spokesperson also notes that “this is the only program directly aimed at consumers” underwritten by Aviva Canada.
Ford, including its Lincoln subsidiary, has entrusted the underwriting of its Canadian program to Co-operators. The same applies to Volkswagen and its subsidiary Audi, confirms the insurer’s spokesperson to the Insurance Portal.
When asked how long these offerings have existed and their geographic scope, the spokesperson replied that the insurer is “unable to provide any other information at this time.” On their respective websites, all four automakers state that their insurance programs are only available in Ontario, without specifying since when.
Aon Canada, for its part, has been selling Porsche’s insurance solution in the country since the summer of 2022. The broker’s spokesperson explains to the Insurance Portal that “the program is offered across Canada, including Quebec, but with certain restrictions in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba due to the way auto insurance is handled there.” In these three provinces, mandatory basic auto insurance is provided by a public system, with private insurers offering only supplementary coverage.
“Porsche is now the only automaker with which we have a program in Canada,” he adds. In early 2019, it was reported that Aon underwrote Jaguar Land Rover Canada’s offering, but the firm’s spokesperson confirms that this partnership has ended. The automaker’s spokesperson informs the Insurance Portal that they “provided Jaguar Insurance and Land Rover Insurance underwritten by Aon from 2018 to 2021.” “We do not offer a branded insurance product at this time,” he specifies.
