The Alberta Insurance Council has fined Jane Keith $1,500 after the agent falsely declared continuing education credits that she did not complete over the course of two years.

The holder of life accident and sickness certificates of authority from September 2009 until May 2022 when her certificates were suspended, Keith was a randomly selected auditee in the council’s CE audit, asked to provide evidence that the CE courses she declared were completed.

In response to the formal demand for information, the agent sent CE credits showing course work completed over a different time frame, before stating that she’d had a computer issue wherein she lost a lot of files. She later stated that she found it difficult to find the same courses offered in New Brunswick that were also accepted in Alberta.

When the regulator followed up with the course providers listed by Keith, four reported back saying they had no record of Jane Keith whatsoever.

“The council considered that the agent not only falsely declared CE credits, but falsely made these statements for two certificate terms,” the council wrote in its decision, before imposing two $750 penalties, one for each certificate term where Keith was short credits, for a total civil penalty of $1,500.
