The Alberta Insurance Council has levied a civil penalty against Jonathan Macala after the agent self-reported his own unlicensed activity, the result of an error in filing applications for his non-resident Alberta license.

A full life and accident and sickness licensed advisor in Ontario since 2009, Macala has been continuously licensed as a life insurance agent in Alberta since August 2019. When he applied for a non-resident license for the first time in 2019, however, he failed to realize that life license applications and accident and sickness license applications are separate in the province. (In Ontario, advisors have the option of applying for both on one application.)

During the time he was without an accident and sickness license, he was compensated for selling five critical illness rider products as an add-on to life insurance products between September 2019 and June 2021.

Although the council says it could levy penalties as high as $1,000 per policy sold while unlicensed, it ultimately ordered a civil penalty of $750 in the case.
