In two separate cases, the Alberta Insurance Council has levied civil penalties of $500 against agents who didn’t respond to the council’s request for information about the agent’s continuing education credits.
In February 2020, the insurance council audited the continuing education (CE) credits claimed on licensees’ 2019 renewal applications. Those being audited were randomly selected, and asked to provide proof of CE credits for the past licensed period.
In both cases, the insurance council emailed their demand for information, sent multiple reminder emails and called the agents several times each. In each case, the agents did not respond by the demand deadline. After receiving a formal report from council, both agents produced the requested certificates.
“The council agrees that the former agent was given a reasonable opportunity to respond,” the insurance council’s life insurance council writes. “The (Insurance) Act requires that all certificate holders provide information when called upon to do so. The public is not well-served when agents fail to comply with demands, like those made in this case. “
For refusing to respond to or provide information requested by a formal demand for information, Jonathan Colp and Lorraine Frilles will each pay a civil penalty of $500.
