The Edge Benefits Inc., a member of The Co-operators group of companies, announced Feb. 20 that it has launched a new suite of products for Alberta farmers, in response to Alberta’s Farm Freedom and Safety Act (Bill 26).

According to the company, the recently adopted legislation removes the requirement that Workers’ Compensation Benefits (WCB) be in place for small farms. Larger farm operations must still have workplace insurance but may now choose between WCB or private insurance.

In response, the company says its new suite of products will provide coverage comparable to WCB for loss of income protection, rehabilitation services and reimbursement for medical expenses. The Edge Benefits’ chief business development officer, Scott Moffatt also points out that the benefits are available around the clock – they do not just cover work-related injuries.

“Farmer owners should also consider protecting their own income and fixed expenses, including the cost of a replacement farmer, should they be unable to work due to an unforeseen injury,” he says. The company adds that farm owners often do not consider the impact they have on running a farm. Beyond the mandatory protection required, Edge also offers a number of additional programs, including health and dental, critical illness and life insurance on a guaranteed to issue basis (no medical required).
