Gina Byrne

Gina Byrne will take over as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) at the end of September, succeeding Leah Anderson

Anderson is retiring at the end of the month. She has led the federal Crown corporation since January 2021, following a long career in the federal public service, including a senior role at the Department of Finance Canada

Byrne has served as CDIC’s Chief Operating Officer since March 2025 and has been with the organization since 2007, when she first joined as risk manager.

A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Byrne previously held positions at MD Financial Management from 2004 to 2007, and before that, at KPMG

Founded in 1967, CDIC is a federal Crown corporation mandated to contribute to the stability of the financial system. It protects over $1 trillion in eligible deposits held at 80 member institutions.

The corporation is funded by premiums paid by its member institutions and does not receive public funds. To date, it has handled the failure of 43 member institutions, protecting the deposits of 2 million account holders—up to $100,000 per insured category and per institution.

Byrne’s appointment was announced on Sept. 9, 2025. On that same occasion, Canada’s Minister of Finance, François-Philippe Champagne, also confirmed the appointment of Martin Glynn as Chair of the Board of Directors. His term will be for five years.
