The Insurance Council of British Columbia will not consider a licensing application from Amanpreet Kaur for a period of one year, after Kaur submitted a fraudulent motor vehicle insurance claim following an accident. Kaur was also assessed a $2,500 fine, was ordered to complete remedial coursework prior to being relicensed again in the future, and must also pay the investigation’s costs.

First licensed in October 2022, Kaur was terminated by her agency in July 2023 and her license was cancelled for non-renewal in August 2024.

The fraudulent claim made to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) occurred after the level 1 agent purchased basic and third-party liability ICBC Autoplan insurance for her vehicle in January 2023. She did not purchase optional collision damage. Feb. 19, 2023 Kaur was in an accident, hitting a light pole at approximately 4:00a.m. Later that day she obtained the optional coverage and two days later reported the accident as having occurred in the early evening the previous day.

A municipality work order for the repair of the streetlight showed that a towing company had been called at 4:00a.m. on Feb. 19 but when the tow truck driver arrived, there was no vehicle, only vehicle parts at the accident area. When the ICBC’s special investigation unit officer interviewed Kaur, initially her responses were consistent with her initial report to ICBC. She later admitted to the lie when the officer asked why there had been a call to tow her vehicle from the location of the damaged streetlight.

The ICBC cancelled Kaur’s access to the Autoplan system for one year and informed her that it would not sell her optional damage coverage for a three-year period. She was also charged under the Insurance (Vehicle) Act in the province with having knowingly provided false or misleading information to ICBC in support of a claim. She was found guilty, fined $2,500, assessed a victim surcharge of $375 and was assessed $2,875 in costs.

The insurance council also sanctioned Kaur for not informing the council about the charges against her. In addition to the council’s sanctions, Kaur must also pay the council’s investigation costs in the amount of $2,312.50.
