The Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO) has published a disciplinary committee’s decision regarding Jaspreet Kaur Uppal, after Uppal was found to have fabricated a college transcript for a client to support a student discount applied to reduce the client’s premiums.

Uppal pled guilty to the allegation that she provided Intact Insurance with a forged academic transcript. The level 1 broker, first registered in June 2017, was reported by Belyer Insurance Ltd., operating as EasyInsure – her employer at the time.

As part of an audit, Intact asked the broker to provide a copy of the client’s transcript. “The broker had not previously obtained a transcript from the client and was unable to do so at the time of the audit. The broker fabricated a transcript from Flemming College,” the decision and reasons document in the case states. The fabricated transcript included a student identification number, grades, dates of enrollment and other details. “The broker did not advise the client that she submitted a falsified transcript on his behalf.”

In addition to a reprimand, Uppal was suspended for three months and ordered to complete three Ethics of the Insurance Professional courses within six months.

“The panel was of the view that the conduct that the licensee engaged in, falsifying a record to satisfy an insurance audit regarding the eligibility of a pricing discount, is a serious ethical breach,” they conclude.
