A British Columbia life and accident and sickness insurance agent, first licensed in January 2021, was fined $1,500 for failing to meet the continuing education (CE) requirements in every year she was licensed. The Insurance Council of British Columbia, however, noted the agent’s ability to self-correct after she completed 60 CE credits on her own initiative after being advised of the three-year, 45 credit shortfall.

According to the intended decision in the case, Maralu Vega De Torres, audited by the insurance council in October 2023, could not provide evidence of having completed any CE during the three licensing periods in question.

“The licensee stated that she had attended numerous CE courses but was unable to provide the associated certificates because of issues with her computer,” the intended decision states. “She had lost all of her records as she had to replace her computer.”
