Eligible WestJet customers booking travel to Mexico, the Caribbean, excluding the United States, and to European destinations including the United Kingdom, are being offered no-charge COVID-19 travel insurance coverage for reservations made between Sept. 18, 2020 and Aug. 31, 2021.

Through its partnership with insurance provider TuGo, WestJet says coverage will be automatically applied at the time of purchase. The coverage is not available to residents of Saskatchewan or for those whose travel plans include cruises, but is included for those travelling between the above mentioned destinations, and to passengers who are travelling to Canada from those same destinations. One-way travel reservations will also be eligible for coverage for up to seven days.

“COVID-19 related insurance coverage will apply to any eligible itinerary that includes at least one flight operated by WestJet,” the company says on its website page dedicated to explaining the coverage, “so long as your booking was ticketed on WestJet and includes a flight operated by WestJet. If you purchased your ticket on a WestJet-operated flight from another airline, even if that airline is a code-share partner airline of WestJet, you will not be eligible for coverage.”

Coverage includes emergency medical and hospital costs for outbound and inbound travelers diagnosed with COVID-19, up to $100,000, quarantine accommodation costs of $150 per day, up to 14 days, ambulance and air evacuation costs up to $100,000, repatriation costs up to $5,000 and one-way airfare for the return of one travelling companion and dependent children if the customer is air evacuated back home for treatment.
