The Canadian Foundation for Advancement of Investor Rights (FAIR Canada) announced August 24 that is has appointed former Ontario Securities Commission director, Jean-Paul Bureaud as executive director of FAIR Canada.

Before joining the organization, Bureaud worked with the World Bank as a financial sector expert helping other countries raise their regulatory standards. Prior to that, Bureaud worked for more than 19 years with the OSC, most recently as director of the office of domestic and international affairs.

“With the current economic situation, efforts to modernize securities laws, and a focus on regulatory burden reduction, it has never been more important for there to be a clear voice for the average investor,” Bureaud said in a statement released, announcing the changes. “I look forward to leading FAIR Canada in continuing to be a catalyst for change.”

Outgoing interim executive director and founder of FAIR Canada, Ermanno Pascutto says the Capital Markets Modernization Taskforce recommendations, and the Canadian Securities Administrators’ review of self-regulation are both of immediate concern for the organization. “There is much more work to be done before we have a financial industry that acts in the best interest of its clients,” he added. “Getting self-regulation right is absolutely critical for the protection of retail investors.”
