A Manitoba agent with a second occupation as a healthcare professional, is being sanctioned by the Insurance Council of Manitoba for not disclosing that she’d started the second job. Specifically, Sandeep Kaur Cheema is being sanctioned for not informing the council within 15 days that she had a second occupation, and for falsely stating on one renewal application that she did not have a second job or occupation.
Cheema was licensed in Manitoba between February 2022 and August 2022 and again from September 2022 until May 2024. Between February and September of 2024, she completed three licensing applications including an initial licensing application, a renewal application and a reinstatement application, all of which inquired about outside business activities.
“The former licensee agreed to report material changes, in writing, to the Insurance Council of Manitoba within 15 days,” the decision in the case states.
Although she began her second occupation in mid-May 2023, on her May 30, 2023 renewal application she falsely indicated that she did not have an additional occupation. In May 2024 she answered yes to the same question.
“Advising of an additional occupation or other employment is an important disclosure obligation,” the decision continues. “The former licensee was made aware on six occasions that she was required to report material changes, in writing, within 15 days and declared that she would do so.” The council also points to its 2024 spring report which included an article about the requirement to disclose material changes.
In addition to the fine, Cheema was also assessed partial investigation costs totalling $250.
