The Life Insurance Council of Manitoba is fining Shela Theresa Reger $250, saying Reger made a material misrepresentation on several licensing renewal applications when she falsely indicated that she lived in Ontario.
Reger is also being sanctioned for failing to notify the council in writing, within 15 days when she moved from Ontario to Manitoba in June 2021.
The life and accident and sickness agent was licensed in Manitoba from August 2018 until May 2019, and again after May 2020. In April 2021 she indicated that she lived in Kingston, Ontario and signed a declaration in which she agreed to notify the council within 15 days of any material changes to the information contained in her application.
Although she moved to Manitoba in June the same year, she completed two additional renewal applications using her Ontario address. It was not until May 2024 that she indicated that her address and home jurisdiction was Manitoba. Reger says she simply did not pay very close attention to her address in the council’s profile.
“After completing her initial licensing application, dated August 24, 2018, the licensee was made aware of her requirement to notify council, in writing, within 15 days of any material change. This requirement was reinforced on each renewal application as well as in emails from council, including two council reports,” the decision in the case states. “The licensee knew or ought to have known of her reporting requirements.”
In addition to the fine, Reger was also assessed partial investigation costs in the amount of $250.
