Manulife Celebrates 25th Anniversary of its IPO with a Toronto Stock Exchange Ceremony

October 4, 2024

Toronto, October 4, 2024 – Manulife, Canada’s largest life insurer, is celebrating a significant milestone this year—the 25th anniversary of its initial public offering (IPO). The 1999 listing remains the largest in Canadian history, raising $2.5 billion. To commemorate this achievement, Manulife will ring the opening bell at the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) on Friday, October 4, reaffirming its leadership role in the insurance and asset management industries, as well as its commitment to raising standards for its clients, employees, and the broader industry.

Founded in Canada in the 1880s, with operations in Asia dating back to 1897 and serving the U.S. market under the John Hancock brand, Manulife has grown into a global company. Since going public, it has continually evolved to position itself as a leader in the sector, transitioning from a traditional insurance model to one that focuses on enhancing customer well-being.

A Reinvented Model to Better Serve Clients

Over the past 25 years, Manulife has undergone a major transformation. Shifting from a claims-centred approach to one that prioritizes the health and well-being of its customers, the company has also expanded its global footprint. Today, Manulife ranks among the world’s top 10 insurers, with a strong emphasis on longevity and customer wellness.

Since 2017, Manulife has made significant strides in five key strategic areas: optimizing its portfolio, improving cost efficiency, accelerating growth, driving customer-centric digital innovation, and fostering a high-performing team. These efforts have delivered a total shareholder return of over 800 per cent, far outpacing the 430 per cent return of the S&P/TSX Composite Index.

Key Highlights:

  • In 1999, Manulife served 1 in 10 Canadians; today, it proudly serves 1 in 4.
  • Its market capitalization has grown from $9 billion CAD to $65 billion CAD.
  • The company’s global workforce has tripled, growing from 12,000 employees to 38,000.
  • The number of clients has increased from 5 million to 35 million worldwide.
