Medavie Blue Cross has entered into a partnership with the Canadian Lung Association to put people who have or at risk of contracting chronic respiratory disease in touch with respiratory care services.

The insurer announced the partnership on Nov. 27, and says that it is now working with the Canadian Lung Association to develop a national network of lung health professionals across the country, including respiratory therapists, nurses and pharmacists. These specialists will offer services, awareness campaigns, and risk interventions tied to lung health and disease management.

The insurer points out that lung disorders are a leading cause of productivity losses from short-term disability absences in Canada, and that the annual cost of employing a person who smokes has risen to $4,262 per smoking employee. Mediavie Blue cross notes that asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease claimants represent 16% of total claimants in its book of business.

"In our discussions with key stakeholders, we recognized a need for a solution for plan members and their families to better manage their chronic disease treatment plan," comments Shelley Kee, vice president of group business at Medavie Blue Cross. "It’s a solid foundation from which we can build as we explore future managing chronic disease programs and partnerships.”
