On June 23, the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario and the Certified General Accountants of Ontario signed a unification agreement, the second-last step to uniting the province's accounting profession under the Chartered Professional Accountant(CPA) designation. The final step will be to ask the Ontario government to pass a new Chartered Professional Accountants Act to replace the acts overseeing the current designations.

Ontario's Certified General Accountants will now become members of CPA Ontario, joining the Certified Management Accountants of Ontario who became members of CPA Ontario in April 2014. In total, 74 per cent of CPA Ontario members voted in favour of unification while 97 per cent of CGA Ontario members voted in favour of joining.

In a news release announcing the agreement, the groups said that the united accounting body "will have a stronger voice at home and around the world” and “one rigorous set of standards for qualifications and conduct". The combined organisation will have more than 80,000 members.
